This is the window of Manganaro’s Grosseria in Hell’s Kitchen, and next door sits Manganaro’s Hero Boy. While both are owned by the same family, there is a HUGE sibling rivalry between the two (completely separate) entities. It’s quite complicated, but the birth of the six-foot hero, dubbed the “Hero Boy” plays a part. With the popularity of the sandwich, the family opened the store next to the Grosseria specifically as a sandwich shop. The family operated both as separate, but due to confusion and some checks cashed to the wrong business, the fires were fueled. Earlier this year, there was news that the Grosseria would be closing when the family sold the business, but according to the NY Observer, there were no such plans. So, to taste a bit of Hell’s Kitchen’s Italian history, with a side of rivalry, head to both Manganaro’s and see whose food wins in the food fight.
